I'm not a standard choice for a Catholic ceremony, but I usually end up doing a few every year and I really enjoy the challenge! It's always best to talk with your church first before contacting outside musicians; many have a music director or online resources that are helpful for both you and me. There are always limitations on what I can play from my repertoire, but if a couple is open to a mostly classical or Celtic program, with one or two church-approved contemporary songs incorporated, we can make it work.

I have been the sole music provider, playing everything from the prelude, the processionals, the mid-ceremony selections (gospel acclamation, offertory, communion), through the recessional. I've also worked in conjunction with the church organist/pianist, covering the prelude and processionals and then leaving the liturgical mid-ceremony pieces to them.

Here are some song ideas based on past weddings:

Classical:

  • Air On The G String - Bach
  • Canon in D - Pachelbel
  • Here Comes the Bride - Wagner
  • I Saw Three Ships - Traditional
  • Jesu, Joy Of Man’s Desiring - Bach
  • Prelude in C Major (Ave Maria) - Bach
  • Sheep May Safely Graze - Bach

Spiritual Songs:

  • Amazing Grace
  • Be Thou My Vision
  • Celtic Alleluia - O'Carroll/Walker
  • Simple Gifts - Thomas Brackett (Shaker spiritual)

Traditional Celtic:

  • I Saw Three Ships - Traditional
  • Red Is the Rose - Traditional
  • The Water Is Wide - Traditional
  • Plus any instrumental tune...

Contemporary Songs:  This category is the hardest to navigate, and I've found most contemporary songs get vetoed by all but the most permissive churches. But many make an exception for a few recently composed songs, such as:

  • Edelweiss - Rodgers & Hammerstein
  • Give Yourself to Love - Kate Wolf
  • Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen) with altered lyrics like this, or with The Wedding Song lyrics subbed in
  • Hymne - Vangelis (instrumental)
  • Morning Has Broken - Cat Stevens
  • There Is Beauty - Pete & Anne Sibley
  • The Wedding Song (There Is Love) - Peter, Paul & Mary
  • Way Over Yonder - Carole King
  • When I Say I Do - Matthew West
