Passim School of Music: Fall 2017
An intro to the traditional ballads and songs of Scotland, England and Ireland, great for both beginners and experienced folks who are looking to expand their repertoire. The main focus will be on narrative ballads, but we’ll also sing through some other songs as well - love songs, historic songs, maybe even a shanty or pub song or two. Each class will feature two carefully selected songs with arrangement suggestions. In addition to discussing the background and history of the music, we’ll also discuss resources, arranging techniques, ornamentation, and adaptation.
All levels and instruments are welcome. The focus will be on singing the songs, but students are encouraged to accompany themselves on their chosen instrument as we try out each one. The goal is to give you a better understanding of the style and subject matter, and to leave you with some songs you (hopefully!) like and will continue to sing, and resources for continuing your own exploration of British folk song.
This class meets on Thursdays from 6:30-7:45pm during: 11/2, 11/16, 11/30, 12/7, 12/14, 12/21.
Fee is $150 / $130 for Passim members.
Private Lessons + Workshops
I teach beginner and intermediate guitar, Irish bouzouki, folk singing and song arrangement techniques. I am currently available on a limited basis for in-person lessons at my Brighton, MA location, as well as online via Skype for folks outside of Boston. I'm happy to work with students at all levels, from someone just starting out with playing songs for fun, to the more advanced student who wants to tackle theory, notation, and technical exercises alongside their chosen repertoire.
I am also happy to set up a lesson or workshop with interested students while I'm on tour.
Email me at email@example.com if you want to talk about planning a trial lesson!
