Passim School of Music: Fall 2017
In this class, I'll show you my approach to finding, learning and arranging traditional ballads! We'll talk a little about the history of song collecting, and go over some of the many resources available to modern singers. We'll compare different versions of some well-known ballads, and we'll work on incorporating ornamentation and adapting for your dialect and accent. Finally, I'll demonstrate techniques for arranging the songs with instruments and making them your own. Each week I'll teach a song to demonstrate one or several of the topics discussed, and each song will come from a different region and source.
Lyric sheets, sheet music, and recordings will be provided. All levels are welcome, but some experience singing (even if it's just belting in your car!) is highly recommended. If needed, we can also take some time going over basic vocal care, warm-ups, and exercises that will facilitate our song-learning.
This class meets on Thursdays from 8:00-9:15pm on 9/14, 9/21, 9/28, 10/5, 10/12, 10/19.
Fee is $150 / $130 for Passim members.
Private Lessons + Workshops
I teach beginner and intermediate guitar, Irish bouzouki, folk singing and song arrangement techniques. I am currently available on a limited basis for in-person lessons at my Brighton, MA location, as well as online via Skype for folks outside of Boston. I'm happy to work with students at all levels, from someone just starting out with playing songs for fun, to the more advanced student who wants to tackle theory, notation, and technical exercises alongside their chosen repertoire.
I am also happy to set up a lesson or workshop with interested students while I'm on tour.
Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you want to talk about planning a trial lesson!
