This is one from the repertoire of Scottish Traveller Lizzie Higgins and her mother Jeannie Robertson. If I'm remembering correctly it has roots on both sides of the Irish Sea, as Traveller communities were known to share songs as they migrated back and forth. I believe Jeannie is thought to have made her rendition more Scottish-sounding with the use of "mavis" in place of "thrush" (as in the songbird), and by naming King James. Other versions may vary slightly.
